While a lot of travelers still opt to stay in luxury hotels and resorts, not many can afford the frills and extravagance that top hotels offer. The pricey room rates, meals, and services are just beyond their budget range.
There are many advantages in choosing budget accommodations for travelers. Booking a less expensive hotel will give vacationers leeway on the extra money they save from lodging. This could mean extra nights at the hotel, shopping money, or even another attraction to visit.
Budget hotels are smaller accommodations that are typically managed by the property owners themselves. This type of hotel is often 2 - 4 stories and is usually located near affordable attractions, major intersections, and convenient to public transportation.
Although comparatively smaller, budget hotels are important components of the tourism industry. They contribute to the overall holiday experience of tourists by offering the basic demands of travelers who need a place to stay away from home.
Some budget hotels are classified under a two-star category. In a 2-star hotel, guests can expect comfortable, well-equipped, overnight accommodation, usually with an attached bathroom. While others think that 2-star budget hotels can be operated effortlessly, they are wrong. Many requirements must be met before an accommodation is given a 2-star classification.
There is no downtime in hotel management unless there is a major renovation, a large-scale natural or man-made disaster that closes down becomes necessary. There may also be 24-hour front desk services, along with daily housekeeping and a self-serve dining option at the hotel, such as a continental breakfast.
There must be at least a staff who can assist and guide guests at any given time. The reception desk must not be left unmanned not just for security reasons but to respond to guest requests and inquiries promptly. Concierge staff must have detailed information of local attractions, entertainment, restaurants, coffee shops, malls, supermarkets, mini marts, spas, and other places that would interest their guests.
A standby power backup and emergency lights must also be available in times of power interruption. The building administrator must also ensure that the water source is not cut even during water outages.
Internet connection is already a non-negotiable freebie that all hotels must provide to their guests. Travellers will always need means to communicate with their loved-ones at home or send emails and other resource materials back to their office. Virtual meetups, airline ticket bookings, food delivery are just a few that travellers will make and the internet provides them access to these services in a few clicks. Definitely a must –have feature in your hotel.
Rooms should be provided with a telephone and printed instructions on how to contact the reception for room service, food delivery, or in case of emergencies.
General safety and security, including fire exits and evacuation procedures must be conspicuously posted in every bedroom. Adequate security like locks, CCTV cameras and other measures must also be in place to secure guests and their property. It is necessary that emergency lights, fire sprinklers and fire alarms are working.
A bed not smaller than 90 cm for single occupancy must be provided in each room with a minimum of 2 bed sheets, a pillow, blanket and bed cover. Beds must be made daily and even if top sheets are provided, the duvet must be changed weekly and for each new guest.
The bathroom must be sufficiently lighted, with a power socket, a TV with cable or satellite channels, a mirror and a waste basket. Wardrobe shelves and a bedside table with drawer are also among the minimum furnishings found inside a guest room.
Although not all rooms are required to have air-conditioning, every room must be well-vented with outside windows. Two sealed branded bottled water must also be provided for free.
The standard bathroom facilities should include a shower, toilet seat with lid and bidet, washbasin with tap, and hot and cold running water available 24 hours. Clothes hooks, sanitary bin with cover, and a toilet paper dispenser must also be provided. A minimum of one new soap, a roll of toilet paper, a bath towel and a hand towel must be allocated for each guest.
Regular monitoring and maintenance of fixtures, furnishing and fittings must be done to ensure that leaks, breakage and replacements are quickly addressed. Systematic monitoring and reporting of broken/damaged items must be in order. Maintenance should never wait for guests to complain before fixing things up. This can be avoided when proactive maintenance checks are done regularly.
Of paramount importance is the attention given to cleanliness and hygiene. Beds must be made daily, the rooms tidied up when requested, linens and towels freshly replaced, complimentary bottled water replenished, as well as bathroom toiletries stocked up.
Housekeeping staff must take careful consideration in cleaning the guest room especially surfaces that involve direct contact of guests including linens, towels, toilet seat, shower, and washbasins. A standard housekeeping procedure must be followed to make sure that health and hygiene are strictly placed as a top priority. If your hotel does not offer to dine, hotel staff must be able to recommend several restaurants with their specialties so guests can easily decide which place to go. Staff should know the directions to these restaurants so they can guide their guests appropriately.
Travellers often would ask for a massage as travelling is, undeniably, tiresome. There should be an easy and efficient booking service. Whether the hotel can provide in-house or on-call masseuse, this added service must be included in the list. Airport and hotel transfers may also be offered and trivial requests should be graciously assisted.
There is a great opportunity for 2-star hotels to be fully occupied particularly by tourists and business travellers. It is also a great idea to partner with local travel agencies that promote package tours to groups. Provide them with brochures of the key features that your hotel offers and offer them discounts for group bookings – your hotel will never run out of guests.
